NCHL action resumed with three games last weekend, the South Division leader board is getting crowded and the North Division lead changes hands again.
The Westlock Warriors can again claim top spot in the North Division thanks to their solid 11-4 win over visiting Morinville Kings. Morinville had a tough time of it early as Westlock built 5-1 and 7-2 period leads to cruise to their win. Rookie Caleb Griffin 3-2-5 and Garry Mindus 1-4-5 paced the Warriors to their win, with Mac Mindus, Kyle Dronyk 2-1-3, Jake Chime, Mason Lyle, Blair Boulerice 1-1-2, and Landon Lavallee 1-1-2 also tallying. Recent AP signing, Westlock native Royce Watson picked up his first NCHL win. Replying with his first NCHL goal for Morinville was Micah Bonneville 1-1-2, Troy Burant 1-1-2, Wayne Gatza Jr. 1-1-2, and Dylan Maybroda 1-1-2 with his first of the season. Rookie net minder Ryen Papirny took the loss in net.
The Lacombe Generals were in Camrose where they dumped the home team 5-3 in a close game. Lacombe scored twice in the last 5 minutes of the second period and again in the first minute of the third to take control of the game. The Generals were lead by the usual suspects, Cam Maclise 2-1-3 and Jamie Johnson 1-2-3. Others to hit the net for the Generals were Craig Gans and Tyler Chavez Leech, while goaltender Travis Yonkman won his second game of the season and is sure to see lots of action while regular Mac Engel serves his 3 game suspension. Carter Danczak 1-1-2, Dillan McCombie and Reese Malkewich with his first of the season replied for the Bruins while Curtis Skip took the loss.
The Devon Barons started off well in their encounter against the hometown Wetaskiwin Longhorns but their wheels fell off for 10 minutes in the second period to turn the game around. Devon had grabbed a second period lead when the Longhorns scored 6 times in the last 9:38 of the period, including two shorthanded goals on the same penalty to turn the game in their favour. Devon's powerplay didn't do them any favours, going 0-6. Ryley Bennefield 2-1-3, who has run up 13 points in his last 3 games, and Marty Sonnenberg 1-2-3, lead the fireworks for the Longhorns, with Mitchell Bushnell (first of the season), Ryan Berry (first of the season) and Jake Mytikiuk also tallying. Goaltender Nick Schneider picked up his second win of the season stopping 39 of 40 Devon shots. Replying for the Barons was Josh Dugas, and Wayne Henke took the loss in net.
With Lacombe and Wetaskiwin both winning, they now share first place in the South Division with the Red Deer Rustlers, who have a game in hand on both teams. Devon's loss coupled with Westlock's win, drops them into second place in the North Division with Westlock having a game in hand.
There are 5 games scheduled for this weekend.
The Division standings could again change as Red Deer hosts Lacombe on Friday and then welcomes Wetaskiwin on Saturday. Also on Friday, Morinville heads to Devon.
On Saturday, Morinville stays on the road as they head to Bonnyville, and Camrose travels to Westlock.
