North Central Hockey League: Overtime & Shootouts

NCHL Overtime and Shootout Procedure

Regular Season Game

If a regular season game is tied at the end of the third period, the teams shall have a 2 minute break, not leaving the ice.

The teams shall not change ends and shall play a sudden death 5 minute overtime period with 3 skaters and 1 goalie per team.

All assessed penalties shall carry over into overtime play.

If the game is still tied at the end of the 5 minute overtime period, there shall be a sudden death shootout as follows:

The team officials shall choose 3 players and the order in which they will shoot.

The order of players shooting shall be designated on the game sheet.

The home team shall have choice of which team shoots first.

All 3 players from each team shall complete their turn if required to determine a sudden death winner.

If the 3 players chosen have taken their shots and no winner has been declared, the team officials shall chose 1 player at a time and the players shall be designated on the game sheet. No player will shoot twice until they've gone through the roster.

Playoff Game

If a playoff game is tied at the end of regulation time, the teams shall leave the ice, the ice shall be resurfaced, the teams shall change ends and play a 20 minute sudden death overtime period.

This shall continue for every 20 minute overtime period, with the teams leaving the ice, the ice being resurfaced and changing ends until a sudden death winner is declared.
