Bonnyville Opens with a Win, Westlock Stays Undefeated

Bonnyville Opens with a Win, Westlock Stays Undefeated

the NCHL

The Bonnyville Pontiacs opened their season with a wild 7-6 shoot out victory over the hometown Devon Barons on Saturday. The game was an entertaining affair with the lead jockeying back and forth between the teams. Devon took a 2-0 first period lead only to see the Pontiacs bounce back to take a 3-2 second period lead.  The fireworks started in the third period as there were lots of goals as the Barons outscored the Pontiacs 4-3 to force a 5 minute overtime that settled nothing.  Bonnyville ultimately won in the shootout outscoring Devon 2-1. Leading the way for Bonnyville were Keagan Pruden with 2 in regulation and one in the shootout and Coltan Buchta with 2, while Jansen Pashniak scored the shootout winner. Josh Dugas had 2-1-3 for the Barons.

In other games on Saturday, the Red Deer Rustlers handed the Wetaskiwin Longhorns their first loss of the season with a 4-2 win in Penhold. Rustler's rookie goaltender Brodan Salmond was outstanding, stopping 35 of 37 shots sent his way by the Longhorns. Chris Raukmann (1-1-2) Nick Bell (1-2-3) and Tyler Berkholtz (1-1-2) lead the way for the Rustlers. Replying for the Longhorns were AP Quentin Greenwood and Zane Lindberg.

The last game on Saturday saw the unbeaten Westlock Warriors dump the visiting Morinville Kings 8-2 behind Mike Ivey's 1-2-3 and Kyle Dronyk's 1-3-4 efforts as Westlocks scoring was split among 8 players. Romano Morrison and Issac Tkachuk replied for the Kings. Morinville's 0-3 start is their worst start since the 2015-2016 season when they started off 1-3. In fact, Morinville has never had a sub .500 season in their 10 year existence in the NCHL. With their 3-0 season start, Westlock has matched their best start since their Vanberg Cup season 2014-2015.

There are five games on the schedule for this weekend. On Friday, Westlock will be looking to stay undefeated as they host the Devon Barons who are still looking for their first win of the season. Westlock's Mike Ivey will play his 150th NCHL game which is the most by an active player.  Ivey is currently sitting in 3rd place in games played, behind only current Warriors coach Rod Kaliel (193) and former Fox Creek Bandits goaltender Ian Chwok (170).  Red Deer is on the road to Bonnyville on Saturday where the Pontiacs will try to stay undefeated. Wetaskiwin travels to Lacombe to take on the Generals and Morinville heads to Camrose to tangle with the Bruins. Sunday's game sees Morinville back at home to entertain the visiting Bonnyville Pontiacs.
