A New Season Begins

the NCHL

The NCHL will kick off it's 29th season with three games scheduled for this weekend.

Defending Vanberg Cup Champions Lacombe Generals start defence of their crown as they will host the Devon Barons on Friday in Lacombe. These teams met in last spring's semi-finals with Lacombe winning the best of seven series in four games. These teams feature two of the best goaltenders in the league with former NCHL MVP and top goaltender Mac Engel of the Generals and last season's NCHL top goaltender, Jordan Cooke of the Barons.

On Saturday, the NCHL's two newest teams face off when the Wetaskiwin Longhorns take on the Camrose Bruins in Camrose. This should turn out to be a heated rivalry between the teams due to their close proximity. Of note, the Longhorns currently have two ex-NHL'ers on their roster in Marty Sonnenberg and ex Edmonton Oiler Steve McIntyre.

On Sunday, the Morinville Kings host the Westlock Warriors as they continue their ongoing rivalry. These teams finished in 3rd and 4th place last season with only a point separating them. Morinville lost out in 5 games to Devon in one quarter final series while the Warriors were swept by Red Deer in the other quarterfinal series.

There are a few changes this season. All teams will be using the Live Scoring function on our website so fans will be able to follow their favourite teams in real time.

Another change is that overtime in the regular season will be followed by a 5 minute sudden death period with teams playing 3 on 3. If still tied, teams will continue with a shoot out until a winner is declared. In the past, regular season overtime was 4 on 4.
