![]() The Devon Barons woke up in the top spot in the North Division after play last weekend.
There were four games played on Saturday across the league, but possibly the biggest upset occurred in Penhold as the winless Morinville Kings, behind the stellar net minding of goaltender Garrett Storms, de-railed the first place Red Deer Rustlers 2-1. The game was a goaltender's duel between Storms and Rustler's tender Brodan Salmond as the teams played to a scoreless tie after two periods. The Rustlers turned up the heat in the third period outshooting the Kings 22-10 but couldn't get one by the Kings net minder. Morinville opened the scoring early in the third period when AP Rory Davidson scored on a short handed breakaway. The Kings would add a power play goal from Troy Durant 4 minutes later to go up 2-0. The Rustlers threw everything at the Kings for the final 15 minutes until the Rustlers were awarded a penalty shot when the Kings dislodged the net. Chris Rauckman scored to make the score 2-1. but that's as close as they would get. Despite the loss, the Rustlers remain tied for first place in the South Division. In Bonnyville, the hometown Pontiacs upended Westlock 6-5 behind Dyson Roy's 1-2-3 in his first game back in the NCHL since the 2021-22 season when he was with the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs. The Pontiacs also got goals from Lucas Isley, Ryan Piche 1-1-2, Janson Pashniak 1-1-2, Brinson Pasichnuk 1-1-2, and Dallas Desjarlais. Replying for the Warriors were Brett Kampjes, Kyle Dronyk, Blair Boulerice and Jesse Morrison with 2. Goaltender Drew Fleury picked up his 3rd win of the season while Keegan Richards took the loss. With the win, Bonnyville keeps in striking distance of the leaders and with the loss, Westlock drops to second place. In Wetaskiwin, the Lacombe Generals dumped the hometown Longhorns 8-4 to move into a tie for first place in the South Division. The Generals, who held period leads of 2-1 and 6-3 got big contributions from Thomas Beretta 2-2-4, Jamie Johnson 1-3-4, Scott Doucet 1-2-3, Colin Zimmer 2-1-3, TJ Brown 1-2-3, and Cam Maclise. Scoring for the Longhorns were newcomer Jake Mytikiuk, Michael Claffey and Zane Lindberg with two. Mac Engel picked up his 4th win of the season while Nick Schneider took the loss. Lacombe outshot Wetaskiwin 55-34. The last game of the weekend saw the Devon Barons dump the visiting Camrose Bruins 6-2 and move into 1st place in the North Division. Scoring for the Barons were Braiden Doucette 1-1-2, Austin Cunningham 1-1-2, Brody Beaulieu, Chris Van Os Shaw 1-2-3 and Dayton Heino 2-0-2 Scoring for Camrose were David Jacobsen and Carter Burton. Goaltender Mike Gudmanson picked up his 3rd win of the season while Bruins net minder Connor Dobberthein took the loss. There are three games scheduled for this Saturday - Camrose is in Lacombe, Westlock travels to Morinville, Red Deer heads to Devon for a battle of Division leaders and on Sunday, Morinville goes to Bonnyville. |
