Red Deer - Wetaskiwin Tie for South Lead
Tuesday, November 21, 2023 - Submitted by the NCHL

The Red Deer Rustlers and the Wetaskiwin Longhorns sit atop the South Division standings after play last weekend where both teams won.

Prior to Saturday's game in Camrose, the Bruins held a pre-game function for members of the Daysland North Stars, acknowledging their enviable record in senior hockey dating back to the 1950's.  They had a good turnout with many former players, coaches, managers present for the ceremonies. NCHL President Sam Maupin dropped the puck between two long time North Stars for the ceremonial face-off to start the game.

Once the formalities were over, Wetaskiwin didn't waste any time, jumping into a 4-0 first period lead. The Bruins responded in the second period with a couple of goals to close the gap only to see the Longhorns tack on 3 more goals in the third period to secure the win. Zack Ayotte paced the Longhorns attack as he picked up 4-1-5. Also scoring for Wetaskiwin were Dylan Sousay, RJ Reed and Dakota Conroy. Goaltender Devin Buffalo picked up his 4th win of the season turning away 36 shots. Replying for the Bruins were Jarod Hovde 1-2-3, Holden Daley and Brett Njaa. Connor Dobberthein took the loss in net. Camrose took 71 of 104 minutes in penalties handed out.

In the other game, Red Deer waltzed into Lacombe and came away with a hard fought 4-2 win over the Generals. The teams played to a 1-1 second period tie with Tim Vanstone scoring for the Rustlers and Dayton Playford replying for the Generals. In the third period, the Rustlers took the lead with a goal from Tyler Berkholtz with 9 minutes remaining only to see the General's Jamie Johnson tie it up again about a minute later. Berkholtz scored his second of the night with just under 3 minutes remaining and Dylan Houston scored an empty netter with 1:15 remaining to seal the win.  Rustler's rookie goaltender Brodan Salmond picked up his 4th win of the season as he turned away 31 shots. Also scoring for Lacombe was Dayton Playford with his second of the season. Mac Engel took the loss in net and the teams each received 10 minutes in penalties.

There are a full slate of games scheduled for Saturday. Morinville heads to Red Deer searching for their first win of the season. Westlock travels to Bonnyville to take on the Pontiacs, Lacombe tries to rebound as they head to Wetaskiwin for a rematch against the Longhorns who won their first encounter 3-0. The last game sees Camrose in Devon. Camrose is trying to keep pace in the South Division while Devon attempts to catch Westlock for the North Division lead.

Red Deer's Tyler Berkholtz took his customary spot at the top of the scoring leaderboard with 11-5-16, followed closely by Lacombe's Jamie Johnson 4-11-15. Lars Kaliel of Westlock continues to lead all goaltenders with at least 3 games played with a 2.31 GAA and a SV% of .938. Red Deer’s Brodan Salmond (2.80 GAA and a 925 SAV%) sits in a tie for second with Wetaskiwin's Devin Buffalo (2.80 GAA and a .922 Sav%).
