Westlock Takes Overall Lead
Wednesday, November 15, 2023 - Submitted by the NCHL

The Westlock Warriors took over top spot in the overall standings last weekend as they split a couple of games, losing to Devon 3-2 on Friday and winning 6-3 over visiting Bonnyville on Saturday. Wetaskiwin moved into a first place tie in the South Division with a home ice 4-3 win over Red Deer, while Camrose crept closer to the South leaders with an impressive 4-1 win over Lacombe.

Friday saw a battle for first place in the North Division, and with the home ice win, Devon momentarily moved into first place with their 3-2 win. Jordan Cooke was exceptional as Devon was outshot 44-31. Austin Cunningham 1-2-3 lead the way for Devon and Terrell Vekved and Brandon Powlik added singles. Replying for the Warriors were Mack Mindus and Scott Ivey. Lars Kaliel took the loss in net as he turned away 28 of 31 Devon shots.

Devon's lead atop the North Division lasted a day as Westlock recovered to down the visiting Bonnyville Pontiacs 6-3 on Saturday. Bryce Van Brabant 1-1-2, Caleb Griffin, Scott Ivey, AJ Kupsch, Kyle Dronyk and Clayton Eisler scored for the Warriors and goaltender Keegan Richards turned away 33 of 36 to get the win. Replying for the Pontiacs were Jamahl Eakett 1-1-2, Coltan Buchta 1-1-2, and Janson Pachniak. Drew Fleury took the loss in net.

Also on Saturday, the Wetaskiwin Longhorns rallied from a 3-2 second period deficit to upend South Division co-leaders Red Deer Rustlers 4-3 in Wetaskiwin. The Longhorn's special teams were the difference as their 3rd period tying goal was scored on the power play (RJ Reed) and the game winner was scored shorthanded (Ryley Bennefield). Also scoring for the Longhorns were Zach Ayotte and Eric Sonnenberg. Devin Buffalo took 1st star honours stopping 47 of 50 Red Deer shots. Chris Rauckman 2-0-2 and Tyler Berkholtz replied for the Rustlers while Brodan Salmond took the loss in net. With the win, the Longhorns pull into a first place tie with both Red Deer and Lacombe in the South Division although they have played one more game.

The upset of the weekend happened in Camrose on Saturday as the hometown Bruins dumped Lacombe 4-1 to move within 2 points of the Division leaders. Holden Daley with the game winner, Jacob Chamberlin, Brett Njaa and Landon Oslanski scored for the Bruins and goaltender Connor Dobberthein picked up the win stopping 36 of 37 General's shots  Defenseman Scott Maetche replied for Lacombe and Mac Engel took the loss in net.

There are only 2 games on the schedule for Saturday, both in the South Division. Red Deer heads to Lacombe with a battle for 1st place on the line to face the hometown Generals while Camrose will try to keep pace with the leaders as they host Wetaskiwin in the Daysland Northstars Alumni night.
