A Busy Week in the NCHL |
|

|
![]() It was a busy weekend for the NCHL as there were 5 games on the slate. On Friday, the Devon Barons upended the unbeaten Westlock Warriors 5-2 to pick up their first win of the season. The Barons were full marks for their win as they took over the game in the second and third periods to silence the Warrior's home crowd. Goaltender Mike Gudmanson was very good in the first period when Westlock had some jump as they outshot the Barons 22-10. Veteran Cody Issler paced the win with 1-2-3 and Adam Kelly kicked in with 1-1-2 with singles going to Terrell Vekved, Braiden Doucette and Dayton Heino. Replying for the Warriors were Mack Mindus and Jesse Morrison. Saturday saw three games played. Morinville went into Camrose looking to secure their first win of the season, but the hometown Bruins had other ideas as they took it to the Kings 10-5. Dillan McCombie 1-4-5 and Jarod Hovde 1-3-4 lead the offence to the win. Lane Lightning, William Raymond and Zane Walker each scored twice with singles added by Mitchell McMullen and Cole Gibson. Connor Dobberthein picked up the win in net. Replying for the Kings were Matt Benko 1-1-2, Cole Gupta, Zach Giacobbo, Leo Lightning and Romano Morrison. This win was the first of the season for the Bruins, while the Kings remained winless. In Lacombe, the visiting Wetaskiwin Longhorns shut out the Generals 3-0 behind the superb goaltending of Devin Buffalo, who turned away 42 shots to claim the goose egg. Scoring for the Longhorns were Ryley Bennefield 1-1-2, Quentin Greenwood and RJ Reed. This was a very well played game with few penalties, some hard hits, nice puck movement and excellent goaltending. With the win, Wetaskiwin takes over top spot in the South Division. FYI, the last time Lacombe was shut out was back on February 8, 2020 when the Daysland North Stats shut them out 7-0. Saturday's last game saw the visiting Red Deer Rustlers dump the Bonnyville Pontiacs 8-3, building period leads of 3-1 and 6-3. Chris Raukmann 2-1-3, Cale Walker 1-2-3 lead the way with singles coming from Mike Dempster, Matt Belich, Donovan Lumb and Tyler Berkholtz. Replying for the Pontiacs were Janson Pashniak 1-1-2, Denis Cadrin and Ryan Piche. Rookie Brodan Salmond picked up the win for the Rustlers while Dustin Johnstone-Watson took the loss. Red Deer moves into a tie for second place in the South Division with Lacombe. Sunday's only game saw the Morinville Kings hosting the Bonnyville Pontiacs, which the Pontiacs won 7-5. It was a tale of 2 games as the Pontiacs came out hot building a 3-0 lead, only to see it evaporate in the second as Morinville came storming back to tie the game at 5. The Pontiacs scored the only goals of the third period to claim the victory. Coltan Buchta 2-0-2, Denis Cadrin 1-2-3, Dallas Desjarlais 1-2-3 and Janson Pashniak 0-3-3 lead the way for the Pontiacs with goals also coming from Mark Ouellette, Scott Thackeray, Tyrell Shott. Replying for the Kings were Austin Grundner 1-1-2, Leo Lightning 1-2-3, Isaac Thachuk 2-1-3 and Cole Gupta 1-1-2. With the win Bonnyville moved into second place in the North Division. We are just about at the 1/4 pole of the season and there have been some surprises. What is with Lane Lightning?? With 8 goals in the first three games of the season, Lane has matched his career goal total of 8 in 40 games played over 4 years. Way to go Lane - keep it up! Westlock's Mike Ivey has had a nice start to his 10th NCHL season and sits atop of the scoring leaders with 1-9-10 in 4 games. Isaac Tkachuk of the Morinville Kings leads all rookie scorers with 3-3-6 in 4 games. Wetaskiwin's Devon Buffalo sits atop the goaltenders stats after 2 games with a 2.00 GAA and a 0.951 SAV%. Westlock's tandem of rookie goaltenders Lars Kaliel and Keegan Richards own the best team GAA of 2.25. The surprise team would be the Morinville Kings who have yet to taste victory this young season. There are 4 games on the schedule for this upcoming weekend, all on Saturday night. Westlock travels to Penhold to tangle with the Red Deer Rustlers, Bonnyville is again on the road to Devon to meet the Barons, Lacombe travels north to take on the winless Morinville Kings and Camrose goes west to renew the rivalry with the Wetaskwin Longhorns. |
