Westlock, Lacombe and Wetaskiwin Extend Winning Streaks.
Wednesday, October 11, 2023 - Submitted by the NCHL

We hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving weekend!

The Westlock Warriors, Lacombe Generals and Wetaskiwin Longhorns all remained undefeated to start off this NCHL season, and Camrose's Lane Lightning nailed his second consecutive hat trick in games played last weekend.

On Friday, Westlock travelled to Devon and upended the hometown Barons 5-2 behind Garry Mindus's two goals and strong play by Warrior's rookie goaltender Lars Kaliel. Tyler Kampjes (1-1-2) and Jesse Morrison (0-2-2) also had strong games for the. Warriors. Replying for the Barons were Trevor Posch and Brandon Powlik, who lost their second straight game.

Saturday marked the home opener for the Wetaskiwin Longhorns and the hometown team didn't disappoint the 1100 fans who crammed into the Co-op Centre to see the event. The visiting Red Deer Rustlers were primed to send the fans home unhappy as they built up a 4-1 second period lead only to have the Longhorns rally in the second and third periods to force a scoreless OT. The Longhorns sent their fans home happy as they won the shootout and the game 6-5.  RJ Reed paced the Longhorns with 2-2-4 (and the shootout winner) and Marty Sonnenburg pitched in with 1-4-5. Tyler Berkholtz lead the way for the Rustlers with 2 goals. After the game it was determined that Red Deer had dressed an ineligible player and will not get the single point in the standings, although all player stats will stand.

Also on Saturday, the Camrose Bruins took on the hometown Lacombe Generals losing 10-6. Bruins goaltender Connor Dobberthein wasn't his usual steady self as the Generals scored on their first 3 shots, and built a 5-0 lead before Bruins coach Tylor Keller replaced Dobberthein with backup Curtis Skip. Leading the way for the Generals were Cam Maclise (2-2-4), Jamie Johnson (1-3-4), Thomas Beretta (1-2-3), Jared Williams (2-0-2) and Luke Coleman (2-0-2). Bruins Lane Lightning scored his second consecutive hat trick in a losing cause, Brett Njaa chipped in with 1-2-3 and Carter Burton added 1-1-2.

There are three games scheduled for this weekend including the return match between Red Deer and Wetaskiwin in Penhold, Morinville will attempt to stop the Warrior's winning streak as they travel to Westlock, and the Bonnyville Pontiacs play their first game of the season as they travel to Devon to tangle with the Barons

Longhorn's RJ Reed (3-4-7) and General's Jamie Johnson (1-6-7) are the early league scoring leaders followed closely by the Bruin's Lane Lightning (6-0-6) and Westlock's Mike Ivey (0-6-6). Warrior's rookie goaltender Lars Kaliel leads all goaltenders with a GAA of 1.00 and a save % of 0.971.
