The Lacombe Generals are one win away from capturing the Vanberg Cup after posting back to back home ice wins over the visiting Camrose Crush last weekend.
Saturday's game saw the Generals outplay and outshoot the Crush by a considerable margin and only the stellar play of Crush net minder Connor Dobberthien kept the score close. The Crush led 1-0 after the first period on a RJ Reed power play marker despite being outshot 21-6 in the period. The Generals responded with two second period goals by Cam Maclise (power play) and Kyle Maas to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. The third was scoreless as the Generals held on for a 2-1 win.
Sunday's game was again close as the Generals earned a 3-2 win with goals from Scott Doucet, Cam Maclise and Craig Gans. Replying for the Crush were Clay Lang and Ryley Bennefield with his playoff leading 15th goal. Goaltending again was very strong at both ends as Mac Engel and Connor Dobberthien turned away numerous chances. Lacombe outshot Camrose 35-32.
The series continues on Friday in Camrose with game 3. Camrose is in a must win situation and needs a win to prolong the series to a game 4, which is scheduled for Saturday in Camrose.
