League Approves Daysland move to Camrose.
Thursday, July 1, 2021

On June 30th, the NCHL approved a recent request to re-locate the Daysland Northstars franchise to Camrose, who will be re-branded as the Senior Vikings. The application to move the hockey club was submitted by Camrose businessman Colin Grindle, who has had previous experience in the NCHL as coach of the Devon Barons.  Then, in July, the club announced that they had changed their name to Camrose Crush as there were trademark issues with using the Viking name.

The move signals the end of a great dynasty in Senior A, AA hockey, as the Northstars have compiled an enviable record of league and provincial championships over the last number years in both the Battle River League and the NCHL.  Their Twitter page says they were 20 time Battle River League champions.

The Northstars were NCHL Vanberg Cup champions 3 consecutive years (2016, 2017, 2018), lost in the finals in 2019, and were poised to win again in 2020 until Hockey Alberta suspended the season due to the Coronavirus with Daysland holding a 2-0 series lead over Red Deer.

In Provincials, Daysland were the Alberta Senior AA champs in 2016, and runners-up in 2017 and 2019.  They had qualified to participate in the 2020 Provincial Tournament that was also suspended by Covid-19.

Daysland entered the NCHL in 2015-2016 as they applied at the AGM that year.  When the other teams in the Battle River League found out that Daysland was moving, they couldn't come up with a plan to continue as Lloydminster had also dropped out. That left Tofield, Big Valley and Bonnyville, and they all decided to make a late application to also join the NCHL.  Tofield folded after one season, Big Vally moved to Eckville after the first season, and Bonnyville has remained since that time.
