Lacombe Generals Are 2023 Vanberg Cup Champions
Sunday, March 26, 2023 - Submitted by the NCHL

The Lacombe Generals are this season's Vanberg Cup champions after defeating the Red Deer Rustlers 3-2 in game 5 in front of a large crowd in Lacombe Saturday night.  Jamie Johnson lead the Generals with 1-2-3 and was named the Vanberg Cup Playoff MVP.

The teams were tied at 1 after the first period, Lane Sim scoring for the Rustlers and Cam Maclise replying for the Generals. In the second period Lacombe jumped ahead 3-1 on goals from Thomas Beretta and Jamie Johnson. Red Deer applied pressure in the 3rd period outshooting Lacombe 16-8, with Ryley Smith scoring their second goal in the final minute, but that's as close as the Rustlers could get.

This marks the end of another NCHL hockey season as the member teams agreed at the fall meeting to not participate in the Alberta Senior AA Provincial Hockey Championship being held this year in Wainwright.  The Generals are the defending AA Alberta Champs.
