Rustlers Advance to Vanberg Cup Finals
Sunday, March 5, 2023 - Submitted by the NCHL

The Red Deer Rustlers defeated the defending Vanberg Cup champion Camrose Crush 7-2 in Penhold in game 6 last night to send them to the Vanberg Cup finals series.  This will be the Rustler's second appearance in the finals, with the first one in 2020 sidetracked by the Coronavirus before game 3 with them trailing the Daysland North Stars 2 games to none.

The win was big for the Rustlers as they have not had much playoff success against Camrose or their predecessors Daysland North Stars. As mentioned, Daysland was poised to win in 2020, then after relocating to Camrose that summer, the Crush ousted the Rustlers in 4 games in the semi finals last season on their way to the franchise's first Vanberg Cup title.

The win sets up a QEll series against neighbouring and 2 time President's Cup champion Lacombe Generals which will kick off next weekend with game 1 in Lacombe.  The schedule should be posted early this week.

Camrose didn't go away quietly however as the score might indicate.  Despite having a short bench and being outshot and outplayed in the first period, the Crush recovered in the second period and kept the Rustlers off the scoresheet.  The Rustlers tacked on a couple more in the 3rd to capture the win. The loss ends Camrose's reign as Vanberg Cup champions and will see either Red Deer or Lacombe win their first league championship.
